bäckerstrasse4 was founded by Gabriele Schober in 2008 as an open platform for contemporary art . The mission was to offer artists who recently graduated from Austrian as well as international art academies the possibility to present their works within an international framework of exhibitions, fellowship programmes, curated projects etc., in order to support and promote their first steps into professional independence. What differentiates the platform is the selection of artists by an international jury of art market experts from 2008 to 2011. The aim of bäckerstrasse4 – platform for young art is to create a transnational, as well as interdisciplinary network for young artists. In this context the cooperation with the Austrian Cultural Forums, e.g. in Paris, Washington DC, London, Zagreb, and Warsaw, as well as the close collaboration with international curators and art theorists are vital components of the platform’s exhibition activity.

Since its foundation in 2008, bäckerstrasse4’s gallery venue has established itself as the exhibition space of the young generation in the heart of Vienna. The gallery team comprises Gabriele Schober (Director), Elise Accarain (Project Manager), Emma Seyffertitz (Project Assistant) and Lara Waechter (Curator, maternity leave). For its commitment and work bäckerstrasse4 – platform for young art was awarded the cultural department of Vienna’s prize „Das engagierte Auge“ twice.
